A recap of Match day 20 in the Uganda star times premier league

Siggy AINE

With 10 games to go in the Uganda premier league, there’s surely still a lot to play for as the table starts to heat up.

The title race is just getting interesting especially among the top three sides and the battle for relegation is more tense.

As games for match day 20 were played over the weekend from Friday, let’s take a look on how things fared out and what to expect in the upcoming fixtures.

Title race

Vipers 0 Vs Express 1

Going into the weekend’s games, the race was mainly between URA and Vipers who were top on the table on joint points 43. The clash of the weekend was between Express and Vipers as this game would have either taken Vipers top of the table and slimmed Express’ thoughts of clinching league silverware this season and vice versa.

The game kicked off at 4pm on Friday with Vipers the tipped favorites on the back if a fine form against the Wankulukuku boys who had taken long minus getting past the Kitende boys.

However, the red eagles managed to break the jinx and won the game which cemented their third place only three points behind Vipers and four behind leaders URA.

Soltilo Bright Stars 0 Vs URA 0

After Vipers succumbing to Express, URA went into the game well knowing that a win or draw would take them above Vipers who were on top through goal difference.

However, all Sam Ssimbwa’s boys wanted was a win to start setting pace in the race for the title but blew this chance to go three points clear. This was the second time that the tax collectors were blowing their chances to go ahead of Vipers with more points in a space of four days. They collected 2 out of a possible 6 after drawing with SC Villa on Wednesday and yesterday. They will have themselves to blame at the end of the season in case they fail to win the title because they have failed to utilize their opportunities and their opponents shortcomings.

Onduparaka 0 vs KCCA 1

KCCA though not considered strong title contenders for this season won their game against Onduparaka at the Green light stadium by a goal to nil.

This win pushed them to fourth on 37 points 7 points behind table leaders URA and with 10 games to go, everything is still possible on their side.

Onduparaka sit in 11th position at 24 points and visit Express on Thursday as KCCA will host Bright Stars on the same day.

Police 6 Vs MYDA 1

The law enforcers ran riot when they faced relegation threatened MYDA thumping them 6 goals to 1.

Abdallah. Mubiru’s men now sit in 5th position on 37 points same as 4th placed KCCA and just like the garbage collectors, the title too for them is not a far-fetched idea and so they can still give it their all.

Police visit Wakiso Giants next on Wednesday while MYDA host vipers on Wednesday too.

Mbarara City 2 Vs SC Villa 1

Livingston Mbabazi may surely have accomplished the prime task for which he was assigned this job, which was steadying the ship and stop a free falling side that was heading into relegation.  The win against Villa was his 3rd in 6 games. What a turnaround!!

The game went ahead at Kakyeka Stadium and Mbarara city continued their fine form against the capital city teams having held KCCA to a goalless draw midweek at the same ground.

Villa sit 8th on the table with 30 points while Mbarara is in 9th at 25 points. SC Villa play BUL next on Tuesday as Mbarara city visit table leaders URA.

The relegation battle is between Kitara who are on 5 points and MYDA who are on 9 points. The biggest battle in the relegation zone will be between Kyetume, Wakiso Giants, Jinja SS, Onduparaka and BUL who are all not yet safe

The results from all the games were as follows:

Bul 0 Vs Jinja 1

UPDF 2 Vs Kitara 1

Kyetume 3 Vs Wakiso Giants 2

Vipers 0 Vs Express 1

Mbarara city 2 Vs SC Villa 1

Bright stars 0 Vs URA 0

Onduparaka 0 Vs KCCA 1

Police 6 Vs MYDA 1

All match day 21 games for the coming week will be played at 4pm Uganda standard time.
