Buwekulu dares favourites Buddu in historic Masaza cup final

Hadija Kalule

Fire works are expected as the mighty Buddu take on underdogs Buwekula in the 2021 Masaza Cup Final on Saturday at the St.Mary’s Stadium in Kitende.

His Majesty Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II will preside over the climax of the 17 edition of the prestigious competition.

The two finalists were in Muganzirwaza group this campaign. Buddu finished top of the group with 10 points whereas Buwekula were second on 7 points.

During their meeting at the group stage, the two sides played out to a 2-2 draw with Isaac Musiima netting a brace for Buwekula. Bruno Bunyaga and Edward Namasa scored for Buddu.

Buddu beat Kyadondo 2-1 in the quarterfinals while Buwekula powered past Buluuli 3-0.

In the semifinals, Buddu edged two time champions Bulemeezi 3-1 on penalties after a goalless stalemate.

Buwekula also needed a 5-3 penalty shootout win to eliminate three time champions Mawokota following a 1-1 draw in normal play.

Buwekula and Buddu were in the same group

Buddu will be playing their fifth Masaza Cup final and have only managed to win the competition once in 2016. They have lost three finals, twice to Ssingo (2015 and 2018) and were runners up to Gomba during the 2020 edition.

Buwekula on the other hand are contesting in only their second Masaza Cup final, they lost to Bulemeezi 1-0 in 2012.

Buddu are under the stewardship of Steven Bogere the man who led them to the 2016 final while Frank Mulindwa is Buwekula head coach.

The final will be fascinating since both coaches are interventionists and details merchants. There will be a game of tactical feint and counter feint.

Meanwhile, Mawokota who lost to Buwekula in the semifinal will face off with Bulemeezi in the third place playoff.

This year, the winners will receive winning prize money of Shs12M, runners up Shs9M, third placed team Shs7M and the team that will finish fourth will bag Shs5M
