Mali wallop Rwanda to extinguish Uganda’s World cup qualification hopes

Viola NANKYA

Mali sealed their place in the next round of CAF’s qualifiers to Qatar 2022 after beating the Amavubi stars of Rwanda in Kigali.

Their fate was fueled by Uganda’s failure to beat Kenya at St. Mary’s stadium Kitende and Sunday’s meeting between the table leaders becomes a dead rubber.

Mali are now on 13 points and four above second placed Uganda who they will host in the final game of Group E on Sunday.

Rwanda’s Djabel Bizimana was earlier sent off in the 7th minute of the game.

Southampton forward Moussa Djenepo fire the visitors into the lead in the 19th minute before their starman Ibrahim Kone doubled the lead moments later.

With a numerical advantage and in a comfortable lead, Mali dominated proceedings in the second period.

Kalifa Coulibaly put the seal on the Malians victory with a long range effort in the third minute of added time.

Rwanda will end their campaign away to Kenya on Sunday.

Mali are through to the final qualification phase while the Qatar 2022 World Cup dream for East African trio of Uganda, Kenya and Rwanda is over.
