Sierra Leone return to AFCON final tournament after 25 years

Sierra Leone 1-0 Benin

Sierra Leone completed the list of the qualified nations that will take part in the 2021 AFCON final tournament to be held in January 2022 in Cameroon.

The Leone Stars beat rivals Benin 1-0 in the final Group L game played at a neutral ground in Conakry, Guinea.

The game was initially meant to be played in March but was postponed following allegations of Sierra Leone manipulating Covid-19 results of Benin players.

Benin needed only a draw to qualify since they were second placed with seven points while Sierra Leone wanted nothing but a win.

Veteran striker Kei Kamara scored the only goal of the game through a penalty kick in the 19th minute.

His strike sent Sierra Leone to seven points, level with Benin who had also won the first leg 1-0 but the Leone Stars had a superior goal difference overall.

Sierra Leone joined Group L leaders Nigeria as the qualified nations from the group and await for a final tournament draw on a draw yet to be communicated.
