Okwi awed by elevation to national team captain status

New Uganda Cranes captain Emmanuel Anold Okwi has revealed how much surprised he was to learning the news of being named national team captain.

The striker who plies his trade for Egyptian side Ittihad Alexandria has taken over from retired Dennis Onyango as the new captain.

His reign starts rather quickly as he will lead the side against south African Bafana Bafana in a friendly slated for June 10th.

While talking to FUFA media, Okwi expressed his gratitude for being chosen as the new team leader.

“First of all, I thank God for this opportunity I have got to lead my country. Every leadership opportunity comes from the Lord. I also take this opportunity once again to thank the technical team and players for the trust they have shown in me,” Okwi addressed.

Okwi added that he was still trying to come to terms with his new role. He also wondered whether he would fit in the roles of previous captains Geoffrey Massa and Denis Onyango from whom he learnt a lot.

“I am still trying to soak it in that am the new national team captain. It is something so huge and an honour that should not be taken for granted. The previous captains Geoffrey Massa and Dennis Onyango were exemplary leaders. I learnt a lot from them,” the striker said.

He added that he will mix his qualities with what he has learnt from the previous captains in order to leave a mark of his own.

Okwi being one of the most experienced and respected players in the national team was suitably a fit candidate for the captaincy.

He also noted that being the captain of the national team has a lot of responsibilities. He said these are ones he’s looking at most although they are challenging.

“To play for the national senior team is already huge. You can imagine what it means to lead the team.I am looking forward to meeting players in a different leadership capacity on the national team. It is going to be nice meeting the players and coaches again, Okwi added.

Okwi concluded by promising fans and Ugandans at large the team will try to achieve it’s best and make them happy.
