Spanish tennis superstar Rafa Nadal has edged Uganda’s very own long distance runner to win this year’s Laureus Sportsman of the year.
The category had several superstars such as basketball great LeBron James, Bayern Munich’s striker Robert Lewandowski among others.
Nadal who was winning his fourth Laureus honor claimed his 13th French Open title hence equalling Roger Federer’s record of 20 grandslams.
After being announced as the winner Nadal said,
“The rest of the sportsmen probably deserve the trophy the same as me, but this was the year for me and I can’t be happier.”
The tennis star went ahead to say how equalling fellow tennis legend Federer’s record wasn’t an easy feat to achieve.
“Winning the French Open and equalling the 20th Grand Slam of Roger Federer has been an unforgettable moment. It means a lot to equal my great rival, but at the same time, my great friend. It’s something very special after all the history we have had together on and off court.”
Cheptegei on the other hand was outstanding last year as he broke the 5 and 10 km records in Monaco and Valencia respectively.
