The Mozambique Football Federation have announced the appointment of Portuguese national Goncalves Horacio as the new national team coach on a contract of 3 years.
The 58 year old takes over from Portuguese compatriot and former boss Abel Xavier’s who was fired last July following his team’s failure to qualify for AFCON 2019.
He has been coach of Mozambique Premier league side Costa do Sol with whom he won the league title and the Cup.
He will be assisted by Victor Matine, Adilson Sataca and Helder Cossa as the goalkeeping coach.
Goncalves’ main target will be guiding them CHAN championships, AFCON and a good show in COSAFA tournaments. Others tasks include restructuring Mozambique national football and giving coaches refresher and improvement courses.
Mozambique have never qualified for a FIFA World Cup, but they have qualified for four Africa Cup of Nations in 1986, 1996, 1998 and most recently the 2010 Africa Cup of Nations in Angola, being eliminated in the first round in all four.
