Cameroon fall to Chile to spell doom for Africa

Sarah Kobusingye

Cameroon’s senior women national team were beaten by CONMEBOL representatives Chile in the first leg of the Tokyo 2020 playoffs

The match was played at the Arslan Zeki Demirci Sports Complex and it is the same venue that will host the return leg in the city of Antalya Turkey.

Cameroon playing as hosts fell to an unfortunate 27th minute goal from Camila Saez who headed home a brilliant header.

Cameroon pushed for an equaliser but experienced striker Ajara Nchout and the brilliant Gabrielle Onguene failed to break the South Americans.

Chile strengthened their grip on the tie through Carla Guerrero in the 75th minute to hand Chile a very crucial advantage.

The Cameroonians refused to give up and their resilience was repaid in the dying minutes of the game.

Ajara Nchout scored a purposeful goal that will prove too decisive in their pursuit to overturn the tie in the return leg that will be on 13th April 2021 .

Africa already have Zambia as their representatives at the Tokyo 2020 showpiece.

Draws for the same are scheduled to take place on April 21st at the FIFA headquarters in Zurich
